Deborah Sfez
My name is Deborah Sfez, I am a, multidisciplinary, internationally recognized artist, born in 1964, working in Cote-d’Ivoire and France.
My tools are Photography, moving image, filmed performance accompanied by my own written texts and my original composed music and sound.
My atypical path begins with my studies of English and French literature and language, then learning the trades of Fashion and Theatre Costumes in Paris.
I use all these different, and various knowledges and skills in my artistic research and works.
I only use all these ways of expression to fully communicate with my audience and create a total emotion in the viewer.
My work mainly deals with the contemporary, pressing, and constant occupation with Identity as a private or a collective issue, with political, national, or historical aspects and attachments.
Filmmaking is thrilling because it demands a wide range of abilities and skills, and it very much resembles to music composing. I have participated in several film festivals.
I usually start with a text that I write, but not necessarily, sometimes I just work as a
collection-addict and make a lot of shots without knowing what I will do with them and how I will edit them as a film.
My short film “Escape” deals with three ways a human being can escape, with his own mind, from reality of everyday life. The film describes in three chapters, three different spaces that the human mind can escape to: a tale, a dream or a fantasy, and religion. It asks questions about vision, memory, and imagination.
I think this film stands out in its originality; it visually describes deep aspects of the mind. I urge the viewer to thing and feel about his own imaginative mind and his own thoughts about vision. It also deals with the media itself of moving image.
I would like to make a long feature one day….I am influenced by French cinema of the 60’s.
